Understanding Janeway: A Modern Platform for Scholarly Publishing and DOI Integration
Janeway is an open source journal publishing platform built with Django, designed to support modern scholarly communication and structured editorial workflows. It provides tools for managing submissions, peer review, production, and publication within a unified environment.
One of the key aspects of contemporary academic publishing is the assignment and management of persistent identifiers such as Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). Janeway can be configured to work alongside DOI registration agencies such as Crossref, allowing journals to assign DOIs to articles and ensure long-term accessibility, citability, and metadata dissemination.
Through integration with Crossref services, publishers can register article metadata, enable reference linking, and support indexing across scholarly infrastructures. This improves the visibility and interoperability of published research while aligning with international publishing standards.
In this test environment, the platform is being explored as part of a broader evaluation of editorial systems, including how DOI workflows and metadata management can be implemented effectively within Janeway.
